Course Overview

The High School Math II course builds on the Math I course. The focus is on quadratic expressions, equations, and functions; comparing their characteristics and behavior to those of linear and exponential relationships from Mathematics I as organized into six critical areas, or units. The link between probability and data is explored through conditional probability and counting methods, including their use in making and evaluating decisions. The study of similarity leads to an understanding of right triangle trigonometry and connects to quadratics through Pythagorean relationships. Circles and their quadratic algebraic representations, round out the course.

Implementation of the Common Core State Standards and Objectives for Mathematics through engaging instruction coupled with rigorous learning activities and assessment is hard work. During the 2011-2012 school year, a dedicated group of WV classroom teachers worked collaboratively to study the High School Math I standards, objectives and performance descriptors and designed quality units of instruction that encompass the content, skills and understandings reflected in this set of grade level standards. The units and lessons created by these teachers, model best practices in student engagement, provide rigorous learning activities and quality formative assessment opportunities that are the basis for this Media-rich course guide.
