The High School Math III course builds on the Math II course and offers a more personalized learning plan aligned to students’ career aspirations – Math III LA, Math III STEM, or Math III TR. It is in Math III that students pull together and apply the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses, with content grouped into four critical areas, organized into units. They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data. Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational and radical functions. They expand their study of right triangle trigonometry to include general triangles. Finally, students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems.
Implementation of the Common Core State Standards and Objectives for Mathematics through engaging instruction coupled with rigorous learning activities and assessment is hard work. Starting in 2012, a dedicated group of WV classroom teachers worked collaboratively to study the High School Math III standards, objectives and performance descriptors and designed quality units of instruction that encompass the content, skills and understandings reflected in this set of grade level standards. The units and lessons created by these teachers, model best practices in student engagement, provide rigorous learning activities and quality formative assessment opportunities that are the basis for this Media-rich course guide.
